Role Summary

The post holder will work as part of a team and assist the scientific and medical staff in the general running of the Wet Laboratory facility by performing a wide range of routine and non-routine clinical, scientific or technical procedures usually under the direction of a registered practitioner.

Key aspects of the role include labeling specimens received, data entry using the laboratory information management system, stock control, equipment maintenance, record keeping, assisting scientists and pathologists at dissection, and general housekeeping.

The post holder will be expected to apply judgement, scientific knowledge and skills in their day-to-day work so as to provide a high quality and timely result service. This is a non-HCPC registered role, and the post holder will therefore not authorise results, nor take responsibility for results issued.

About this Role (Responsibilities):

  • Receive and accession patient specimens, slides, and blocks
  • Data entry and competent in the use of the LIMS and Tracking System, including its use in registration and verification of data relating to specimens, slides and blocks
  • Carry out routine and non-routine specimen preparation and/or analysis including assisting medical and scientific staff at dissection
  • Carry out routine maintenance on laboratory instrumentation including first-line troubleshooting where appropriate
  • Carry out, with appropriate care, the exposure to and transport of specimens and harmful chemicals which must be dealt with under COSHH regulations
  • Ensure compliance with GDPR/CQC regulations and maintain patient records in accordance with all data protection protocols
  • Using IT skills, including basic Word Processing skills to review SOPs and other documentation
  • Participate in relevant audits in line with UKAS requirements and ensure ongoing compliance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards in day-to-day work
  • Respond to incoming calls, voicemails, and email tickets in a polite and supportive manner, seeking scientific staff advice where required.
  • Basic troubleshooting of customer support problems
  • Track and document technical problems
  • Know the limits of own practice and escalate uncertainties, concerns and technical issues to senior member of staff when appropriate
  • Assist with Laboratory stock control and carry out regular checks of stock levels, replenishing and ordering these as appropriate
  • Assist with out of office hours support when required
  • Assist with equipment verification work and Research Pathology technical support as required
  • Comply with applicable health and safety requirements
  • Assist with the general tidiness and cleanliness of the department by performing

basic housekeeping tasks

  • Participate in CPD activities and develop/maintain a portfolio of these activities, including identifying own learning needs

About You (Skills and Experience):

  • A-level in a science subject required.
  • Scientific diploma, or relevant certification a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in transcription of documents, microsoft word, excel, and keyboard skills
  • Basic IT troubleshooting experience is an advantage
  • Experience of previously working in a laboratory and/or digital pathology is an advantage
  • Experience working with an electronic documentation system is highly desirable.
  • Organized and diligent with activities
  • Motivated and independent worker
  • Good customer service skills and ability to work with various groups (internal and external customer base).
  • Experience with GLP regulations or software will be ‘a distinct advantage.’
  • Good time keeping skills and ability to meet timelines
  • Proactive with improving document control and training process.
  • Willing to learn and be proactive in developing skills & experience
  • You will have shown leadership skills in previous positions and are keen to develop these skills further.
  • You bring a sense of urgency to the work that you do and are able to execute on tasks by using your initiative.

Work Environment:

  • This position is Office Based; Kidlington, Oxford, UK. Travel may be required on an ad hoc basis to client sites, for client onboarding and system demonstrations.
  • You may be requested to work overtime for special program events.
